Personal grants are an obscure source of free funding without repayment requirements; unfortunately they're hard to come by compared with what's advertised on late night infomercials.
State and local governments offer many social service crisis programs to assist those in need, such as free food programs and gas cards/utility deposits in New York.
1. AFDC
AFDC (Aid for Families with Dependent Children) provides cash welfare payments to families who qualify. While initially designed to aid widows whose husbands had passed on, today a significant percentage of recipients are single mothers who never married and lack job skills.
In the early 1970s, organized AFDC recipient groups and community legal aid offices challenged state regulations such as social workers' compulsory inspections and home searches as violations of welfare recipients' right to privacy and dignity. The Supreme Court struck down many of these regulations through King and Shapiro.

SNAP participants often report better health, taking less sick days at work and making fewer doctor office visits than their counterparts who do not participate in the program. Furthermore, participation can reduce housing costs significantly.
Adults without dependents are limited to three months of SNAP participation every three years unless they participate in an employment and training program for 20 hours per week, though some states - such as New York - have temporarily waived these requirements during a pandemic.

USDA provides numerous grant programs that may help. Their funds may support projects related to organic farming, climate change research, rural development and other agricultural topics.
Rural America can rely on Farm Credit America for home loan financing needs and home improvement loans, while their grants programs offer financial support to farmers raising poultry, cattle or other farm animals.
The USDA is deeply dedicated to environmental justice and has made efforts to incorporate this principle into their core work. They have identified four focus areas including climate change mitigation, increasing racial equity and economic opportunity and food security improvement.

SNAP-Ed is the educational arm of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamps). SNAP-Ed provides knowledge to people to make their SNAP dollars go further while cooking healthy meals and living active lifestyles.
SNAP-Ed is implemented at a state level through local implementing agencies. The program offers nutrition education classes and social marketing initiatives while working to implement policies, systems, and environments which make healthier options more accessible to everyone.
EARS forms are currently used to gather uniform information on SNAP-Ed activities. Many commenters suggested that FNS consider alternative means for collecting this data, including broadening eligible areas and populations to include institutional settings and buffer zones.

Government grants are an effective way for low income families to alleviate their financial strain and get back on their feet. These no-interest loans or cash payments do not need to be paid back later.
At present, different models are being tested to address rising costs and quality concerns in traditional Medicare. These new systems typically link a portion of providers' payments with spending and quality targets achieved, and are expected to yield significant long-term savings that should extend trust fund solvency through 2028.
