Few historians have been as tolerant to corporations as Manko is here. Her meticulous research and shrewd understanding of business operations allow us to see a corporate world of blind spots and slow responses, bad decisions and Avon Book May poor management.
Avon's Character Change
Avon's cynicism and disregard for humanity makes him a popular character with his fans. Avon is a brilliant businessman with a unique understanding of human nature. He is a unique character in that he is both a hero as well as an antihero. This dichotomy makes him an intriguing character for both critics as well as fans. Avon is an interesting character because he is the hero of B7 and the villain.
The character's ambiguity makes it more suitable for fanfiction than many other characters from television series. Many fans make use of this ambiguity to create a variety of fan works. The most common fanworks are focused on the complicated relationship between Avon and Blake. The relationship is explored in a variety of fanworks, including hatesex, dub-con, and curtainfic. Avon is also an attractive character due to his sexiness.
Some fans also utilize Avon as a vehicle to express criticism of capitalism and the business world. In these works the former California Perfume Company is criticized for its insistence on selling its products to women by wrapping them in the ideals of respectability and domesticity. Manko also reveals the way in which the company's rhetoric covered what was in essence an extremely profitable business idea.
Many fans also use Avon as an instrument to create comedy. Avon's story of his teddy bear has become a B7 cult. Avon is a villain despite his sexy look. He is a genius, with an impressive degree of technical knowledge. Additionally to that, he has an exceptional sense of humor.
B7, unlike other sci-fi series it is not an action or adventure show. The writers don't treat the characters like caricatures. Instead they portray them as believable individuals with their unique strengths and weaknesses. This makes them more enjoyable to watch.
Avon's fans have made a number of videos. Some are angsty, while others are comical. The angsty ones tend to focus more on Avon's tragic journey in the canon. The comedy videos tend to focus more on Paul Darrow's clumsiness and his strange flourishes when aiming at a gun.
Avon's relationship with Rupert
Avon's relationship has always been one of tension with Rupert, who is seen both as an enemy of IAA and as a egotistical, wealthy man who only cares for his own interests. Avon is difficult to work with due to the fact that he lacks empathy and respect for others. He is also often seen using his wealth and intellect to manipulate others around him.
Avon's character starts to change in a positive way in the most recent book. Her story reveals her transformation into a stronger and more confident woman. She isn't shy to voice her opinions or fight for the things she believes in, and she begins to take an active role in her professional life. She also assumes leadership roles in the IAA and is more involved with charitable causes.
Avon's relationship with love has improved due to the introduction of Leonie. Leonie is a girl of just a few years old who is extremely devoted to Avon and believes that he is her savior from a life of abuse. She and Avon have many conversations about self-love and its importance.
Avon's newfound confidence and sense of purpose has made her more open to working with others. She realizes she cannot do everything by herself and seeks help from her friends. She grows more mature and empathic, as she no longer needs to be rescued by her friends. She is more receptive to her coworkers, and she insists on how important it is to have a strong support network in times of crisis.
Avon's Relationship to Leonie
In this novel, Heyer turns a common romantic convention upside down. Instead of the afflicted hero turning to sex, gambling or alcohol, Heyer's heroine is fighting an internal struggle. Leonie is an individual who has been living as a boy for most of her life. She is hesitant to be a woman again. Avon finds her difficult to handle however, he is able to curb his usual sarcasm with a grin to take good care of the woman.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this novel was how well Heyer contrasted Leonie's youthful ways with Avon's cool, organized and reserve. His calm manner of speaking contrasts with her violent physical reactions and blood-lust. I also liked the way he defeated the villain without threat or chasing him; instead he employed insinuation and storytelling.
Heyer subtilly emphasized the limitations of women in this era. Leonie hates trading in her breeches to get layers of skirts and petticoats. she isn't a fan of riding side-saddle and is constantly shooting at villains to death (even though it's a dangerous job). While Avon is a bit apprehensive by her erratic behavior at first, he soon realizes that he loves her.
I did find it a bit difficult to remember who was who in the beginning, because Heyer refers to the Duke with a variety of different names in the first few pages. Once you have it figured out, it becomes easier to read. This was a wonderful book that I strongly recommend it! You won't be let down regardless of whether you're a Georgette Heyer lover or just like a good romance!
