Most robotic hoovers vacs require some maintenance, like emptying (and occasionally rinsing) the bin, and wiping cameras and sensors. They also need to be connected. A lot of them have apps for smartphones for scheduling, setting and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980, the latest in a series of top-of the-line robot vacuums, is a staple for every modern home. This model is incredibly powerful suction and an HEPA filter that can assist anyone suffering from allergies. It also comes with a powerful battery which can be cleaned for up to two hours and returns to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

It also has a feature called smart mapping that uses multiple sensors to determine the areas of your home that require attention and create a cleaning route around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of moving around toys that have been left scattered on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from under the furniture. It also has a camera that will snap the Roomba back to reality when it begins to drift from its intended location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and, therefore, tend to resist tangles better than previous models. They're also a bit higher than the older rollers, and will fit better under beds and couches that are low and are designed to help this model navigate more easily across a variety of flooring kinds.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models of this class however, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect particles of dirt embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous model, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean at minimum three times from various angles.

In our tests of its performance in our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored very well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a good job picking up pet hair but had a difficult time with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots in our list, despite these minor limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of the-line models. It still has a lot of features we'd expect to see in a top-of-the-line model however, it doesn't come with all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration you might find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start up and running immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it work. It will return to its dock when its battery runs out or it's stuffed with debris, and it has indicators on the top of the device to indicate that the bin is full, it's time to recharge or if its Wi-Fi signal is lost.
